Vinyl Coated Coasters

At our quilt retreat, I gave everyone kits to make vinyl coated coasters. They were so easy to make and lots of the retreaters got caught up in it and made more! With the holidays coming up, they'd make great gifts or fund raiser projects. Down the road you could make them for teacher gifts or favors for a party. So many options!

You need 2 ~ 5x5" squares of two fabrics, 1 ~ 5x5" square of batting, and 2 ~ 5x5" squares of ThermoWeb Iron-On Vinyl. We sell it by the yard at the Cottage.

Pull the paper off of the vinyl and lay the sticky side on the right side of each 5" square.

Place the paper over the top of the fabric and press. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THAT PAPER ON IT!! Trust me on this one!

Sandwich the cotton batting between the fabric/vinyl combinations, with the right sides out and the raw edges even.

Sew around all sides with a 1/2" seam allowance, pivoting at the corners.

Trim 1/4" from the stitching line with a decorative blade. I used an OLFA scallop blade for mine. You might have to press a little harder because you're going through all of those layers. You could use a pinking shears, too.

Ta-da! You're done!! My friend Liz used a charm pack from Moda's Aspen Frost. She was able to make 21 sets. For an entire charm pack you'll need 2 yards of the Iron-On Vinyl. She made them at the retreat and had them all done in minutes and is giving them to her niece for a fundraiser.  Imagine what you could create with the extra charms you have laying around!
